( 🔶Persians have named the longest night of the year, 30th of Azar, “Yalda”, meaning birth in Syriac language. The famous Persian scholar, philosopher, and astrologer, Abu Rayhan al-Biruni believed that sun was born after Yalda night. Persians all over the world celebrate Yalda by gathering together, jolly conversations and laughter, reading old stories and poems, and enjoying the nuts, fruit, and traditional foods like “Dolma”. The symbol of Yalda is pomegranate. It is because it represents all which Yalda is being celebrated for: fertility, blessing, and happiness. Another ritual on Yalda night is to build a fire. The fire is a symbol of sun and light. It is meant to scare away the devil which is ignorance and darkness. In conclusion, Yalda is a traditional Persian celebration of wisdom, happiness, and prosperity. It always comes with lots of food, storytelling, happy memories and spreading love.
